Ingress and egress has never been easier thanks to Smart Comfort Entry. As soon as you unlock the Superb Wagon and open the front door, the driver’s seat moves from the last position used, plus about an extra 10 cm backwards. When you close the door and press the start button, the seat moves, with you on it, back to the driving position. When you get out of the car, the procedure is reversed.

When they are interconnected, the car can make driving a lot easier and increase travelling comfort. Once activated, Travel Assist can automatically stop and restart, keep the car in lane, follow other vehicles in a traffic jam, or show the surrounding traffic on a display in front of you.

The adaptive cruise control maintains a safe distance from the vehicle ahead at a selected speed, controlling the engine and actuating the brakes to automatically accelerate or decelerate as needed. The system combines a cruise control system with a radar-based distance controller and is active up to 160 or 210 km/h.

This system works in conjunction with a camera to recognise lane markings on the road, including yellow lines during roadworks, traffic cones, and other roadside or lane borders. The Adaptive Lane Assist intervenes in an attempt to keep the vehicle in the selected track within the traffic lane, and the car does not “weave”.

Emergency Assist reduces risk of an incident if the driver is not feeling well. If Adaptive Lane Assist detects that the driver does not have hands on the steering wheel even after a warning alert, Emergency Assist is activated, decelerates the car to halt while keeping it in lane and activating the hazard warning lights.

Intelligent Park Assist helps the driver to park the vehicle in a line of parallel-parked or a row of perpendicular-parked vehicles, and also to exit from such parking spots. The Park Distance Control warns of the potential risk of colliding with obstacles during parking by drawing data from the sensors, the driving parameters, and the steering wheel angle. This system prevents a collision with a person when reversing by analysing the area behind the car using the rear-view camera image and braking the car if a human figure is detected at a risky distance.

Providing you with comfort and orientation during a parking procedure, the rear-view camera uses a camera located on the tailgate handle. Working with the infotainment screen, the system shows the space behind the car and indicates dynamic guide lines, based on the vehicle width.

Front Assist with Collision Avoidance Assist
The Front Assist is a collision-alert safety system. Faced with an unavoidable collision, it applies the brakes to minimise the consequences. It also performs an emergency stop if a pedestrian or cyclist attempts to cross the path of the car. The system also registers pedestrians and cyclists travelling in the same direction as the car and, in relation to these road users, uses the same warning and braking process as that applied to vehicles ahead.
In a critical situation, where Front Assist intervenes by braking and the driver indicates they are taking evasive action by the way they move the steering wheel, Collision Avoidance Assist makes targeted interventions in the steering to help drive around the obstacle.

Turn Assist
Turn Assist, supplied as part of Front Assist, is designed to monitor an oncoming vehicle when you are turning right (left-hand drive imagery shown), for example when you are at a junction. If there is an immediate danger, it brings the vehicle to a complete standstill and triggers the warning signal. The system is adapted to right hand drive for the New Zealand market.

Crossroad Assist
This assist reacts to vehicles or cyclists approaching in a cross-direction, especially when pulling out onto a road where the view is obstructed by parked cars, fences and other obstacles. In the event of imminent danger, the system triggers an acoustic and visual warning and activates emergency braking.

Side Assist
Thanks to two next-generation radar sensors at the rear of the car, the Side Assist detects vehicles approaching from behind or that are in the car’s blind spot. The driver is informed of this using an LED signal on the inside of the wing mirror housings. Side Assist can detect vehicles up to 90 m away and thus also effectively warns the driver of hazardous situations on motorways and dual carriageways.

Exit Warning
This safety feature is another of Side Assist’s complementary functions. Exit Warning visually and acoustically warns the driver and other passengers, when, for example, they are exiting parallel parked car, if opening the door could result in a collision with another vehicle, a cyclist, an electric scooter or a jogger. Exit Warning makes use of Side Assist’s rear radars and monitors area behind and along the sides of the car up to a distance of 35 m.

The system pre-tensions the front seat belts in the event of imminent collision or in unstable driving situations when the ESC engaged and closes the side windows almost fully in order to prevent foreign objects from entering the vehicle. The system works with the front and rear radars.

If a Superb Wagon is involved in an accident and the airbags are activated, it could remain in motion and cause another accident, which is where the Multi-Collision Brake comes in, bringing the vehicle to a standstill to prevent a pile-up.

Attention and Drowsiness Assist
This system monitors drivers’ behaviour and assesses how tired they are using inputs from various vehicle control units. At speeds above 70 km/h, the system detects deviations from normal driving and continuously assesses drivers’ driving behaviour in order to judge their current fitness to drive. If the system detects driver fatigue, a warning tone sounds and a warning message is also displayed in Virtual Cockpit.

The Škoda Superb Wagon is all about safety without compromise. Besides the safety systems already described, the following features are available as standard or an option:
› Isofix and Top Tether anchorage points to fasten a child seat to the second-row outboard seats. Isofix is also available for the front-passenger seat.
› Unlike cruise control, which maintains a set speed, the speed limiter allows the driver to travel at any speed up to, but not more than, the predefined value.
› ABS keeps the wheels from locking during emergency braking or when braking on slippery surfaces.
› By increasing the braking pressure, the HBA braking assist helps drivers in situations in which emergency braking is necessary. This can lead to a significant reduction in the braking distance required.
› EBD automatically optimises braking pressure and the overall braking balance and prevents the rear wheels from overbraking.
› MSR counters the locking action of the driving wheels, which can occur when the driver decelerates on a smooth surface.
› The ASR ensures smooth starting and acceleration without the wheels spinning on slippery surfaces.
› EDL helps when accelerating or driving uphill with low traction under one of the driven wheels.
› TSA operates when the vehicle is equipped with an original towing device with its own control unit. The system works on the principle braking one or more wheels and simultaneously reducing engine torque as necessary. The TSA system intervenes and helps stabilize the car and the trailer.
› XDS+ helps the driver during sharp turns and ensures that the vehicle behaves neutrally during dynamic cornering. The control electronics essentially simulate the presence of a self-locking differential to improve traction and driving dynamics during turns. As a result, the vehicle will take bends much more assuredly and naturally.
› Tyre Pressure Monitoring TPM+ keeps the driver informed of the tyre pressure at all times.
› The Hill-Hold Control helps drivers to start uphill safely. The system activates itself on inclines of five degrees or more and ensures easy and safe uphill starting without the use of the handbrake. The system keeps the car from rolling backwards or stalling.
› Flashing brake lights reduce the risk of rear-end impact, especially when approaching the traffic jams on highways or sudden braking in front of the unexpected obstacle.
Drive and steering
All-wheel drive
The Škoda Superb Wagon is available with an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch. The state-of-the-art all-wheel drive guarantees optimal driving dynamics, the highest standard of active safety, and economical consumption.
Torque distribution to all four wheels is automatic and depends on the driving environment. The ideal torque for the rear axle is calculated by the control unit. Adjustments are made by variable pressure on the clutch plates.
